Follow The Skyscraper Technique
Many SEO experts recommend following the Skyscraper technique for accessible link-building off-page activities.
As the name suggests, the skyscraper technique aims to create higher quality and larger content than your competitors. To create “skyscraper” content, you need to analyze the content of competitors at the top of the SERP with the most backlinks and then produce more detailed content.
It’s not about adding more words but providing more value to your readers.
For example, if the main content is about “Top 15 Social Media Marketing Tips,” the Skyscraper content should be about 30 or 50 tips.
However, most high-rise content is just a wordy blog post and doesn’t add any value to the reader.
There is a fine line between superficial content and valuable content. The writer should analyze it while completing the content.
Perform Keyword Research
Most beginner SEO writers focus on the main keyword, leaving out other high-potential keywords that can help increase conversion, keep this in mind if you want to rank on Google fast.
I prefer to use Ahrefs to generate maximum keyword ideas for the detailed content post.
Answer The Public is another source of keyword ideas for your blog post. You can start by brainstorming and gathering all the related keywords in a notebook and figuring out how to naturally add them to your content structure.
Preparing Your Content Structure
Keep user intent in mind as you create content structure, then answer reader questions step by step.
My main technique for writing an article for the SERPs starts with analyzing the top 10 search results and watching 10 YouTube videos to create a detailed content structure. This way I collect more ideas that can add value to readers.
An SEO Page
After finishing the content, every writer should follow some mandatory on-page SEO activities to help the content rank on Google fast on small keywords.
A long and unclear URL can hurt your SEO efforts, and it’s never a good idea to change the URL after posting the content. Try to incorporate the main keyword in your URL and keep it short.
According to research from Ahrefs, URLs between 15 and 17 characters are more likely to rank on Google.
If ” mobile user acquisition” is the primary keyword, be sure to create a URL like this: /mobile-user-acquisition/.
Use Light Images
Website speed is also an important factor if you want to rank on Google, and heavy images are the main source of increased website load times.
A detailed article over 2000 words usually has at least 15-20 images which can increase page load time, which can increase bounce rate, and affect search engine rankings.
Use tinypng to compress image size.
Provide Information From The First Page
The first page is the content visible to the visitor when the webpage is loaded without scrolling down. It is the first thing visitors see after landing on the page.
55% of visitors spend less than 15 seconds on a web page. It’s a tiny part to grab the visitor’s attention and make them scroll down the page.
Just look at this Backlinko homepage.
Visitors easily understand the content of the page.
This is the home page tools example, but how do you provide accurate information for a long blog post?
For this, I prefer to mention the table of contents right after a precise introduction. This practice could also help you rank on featured snippets.
Don’t try to be so philosophical at the start of a blog post and get to the point quickly this will help you to rank on Google better.
Optimize Title, Add Alternate Text & Optimize Meta Description
These are some basic SEO practices that every copywriter should follow.
Add different variations of keywords in captions and add alt text in all images to describe the purpose of the image.
Currently, Google itself selects the relevant content from the article and displays it as the meta description. Therefore, you should optimize the first paragraphs of the article that you want to use as a meta description.
It makes sense that all SEOs and content writers incorporate internal linking into their standard operating procedures. This is a very useful practice that gives the website the initial boost in the search engine.
Internal linking consists of integrating the new article into existing articles on the website.
Try to embed your article with a contextual link in the best-performing pieces of content with maximum backlinks, as these are the ones indexed first by Google. Therefore, new content will be indexed much faster if it is linked to the best-performing content on the site.
For internal contextual links, use the following query on Google to find content items to embed naturally.
Website: www. (your website).com “keyword”.
For example, if you are writing a guide on email marketing, you should use “email marketing” as the keyword. Any articles on your website that contain the keyword “email marketing” in the content will then appear on Google.
So these are all the steps that I go through before undertaking awareness-raising activities.
Now comes the exciting part of acquiring backlinks from high domain authorities.
Link Building Awareness
If you want to rank on Google fast, Link building is the most crucial step. For those who have no idea what link building is, here is a brief definition;
Basically, link building means getting mentioned on other websites through hyperlinks. Many SEOs consider link-building activities to be the most important and difficult part of their job.
What is the interest of Link Building for the SERP?
The search engine considers link building an important factor in analyzing a page’s ranking.
In other words, link building works like word of mouth for Google. The backlink is like a suggestion. When a website mentions another site, it means that it trusts that webpage.
When a high authority website (80+ DR) mentions your web page, it increases your chances of ranking higher in search engines. This is something important to keep in mind.
Here is the process I follow that gets me ranked on the first page in just 35 days.
Suggested Tool: Ahrefs
Competitors are the most important source for providing a backlink idea. Many SEOs make the mistake of sending cold emails to irrelevant websites, which results in wasted time and energy on the wrong strategy.
First, check the site that is providing backlinks to your competitors, which means these sites are already accepting a similar type of content.
Ahrefs is the best tool to find your competitor’s backlinks.
Enter the main keyword in Keyword Explorer and drill down to the SERP position.
Check each competitor’s backlinks individually.
Tip: Click on “one link per domain” to avoid repeated sites.
Once you have found all the websites to approach, copy the URLs into the spreadsheet to begin outreach activities.
Find Relevant Emails
Suggested Tool: Hunter.io & Mail Track
You now have a site/blog to tackle, but not the necessary email addresses. What do you do next?
I use Hunter.io to scrape email addresses from any website. Just go to the site and click on its extension to get the emails.
Its free version allows 50 monthly website searches.
Who do I speak to?
Try to find the editor and manage the editor’s emails. If you can’t find the editor’s email, try to approach the one with the most sources.
Mail Track is a free tool that allows the sender to know the status of his email.
This way, you can track the number of opened and unopened emails, allowing you to prepare your follow-up email template for different purposes.
Ad Posting Awareness
Guest posting is one of the most conventional and easiest ways to generate backlinks. Many websites allow contributors to post valuable content on their sites. In exchange, there is usually a do-follow link in the content or sometimes in the author’s biography. This helps you to rank on Google much faster.
After collecting the emails/contacts, offer them to contribute to their websites/blogs.
Many websites have a “write for us” page where the guest post writer must add suggested topics and wait for the approval.
However, I prefer to email the page editor in both cases and forward the suggested topics.
Before tackling the question, do a few prerequisites to get a better response rate.
- Check the theme of the website to find out what type of subject it covers.
- Suggest at least five relevant topics that match the theme of the website.
- Topics should not already be covered on the website.
Guest Post Email
- Briefly introduce yourself. (Mention your expertise, for example, digital marketing expert)
- Choose a compelling topic and prepare an outline.
- Your plan should include an introduction and awareness of the topic, a mention of problems or risks, solutions and tips to avoid them, and a conclusion or your opinion.
- Always ask for feedback.
- List your important publications at the end, as samples of your writings.
This free invitation posting strategy allowed us to quickly acquire backlinks from relevant websites, and we quickly went from 101+ to the top 30.
However, what gave us a real boost in the rankings was acquiring a contextual backlink from a 90+ DR website.
Remember I told you to prepare content based on the skyscraper technique? Well, here’s how it works.
Getting a backlink from a high authority website depends entirely on the quality of your content. Producing quality content means no one has written the post better than you.
Finding contextual backlinks requires both patience and creativity. Most websites/blogs prefer not to respond to such emails. You must therefore meet certain prerequisites before requesting a backlink.
- Use a work email address, not Gmail.
- Use creative yet relevant email subject lines to increase open rates.
- Offer something back to the website.
- Let them know how it will benefit their position.
I know it’s a lot to ask, but I’m just mentioning what works for me
Here is the email template my SEO expert used to request a backlink;
Apparently, this email template looks informal, but it got a backlink from the 90+ DR website.
Do you know what the best part was? We get a backlink by deleting the existing backlink. That’s the power of skyscraper content pieces and email content.
Right after this acquisition of a backlink, my article jumped 28 positions in a single day.
In a single day, he went from 38th to 10th position. FYI: Now it’s listed on the featured snippet.
The results were astonishing and unprecedented. After this success, I really understand the power of backlinks from important websites.
This technique does not require any technical SEO expertise, just a good approach. If you run a blog or a niche affiliate site, you can make a lot of money from home.
Before concluding, let’s review the whole process once again.
💬 Do thorough keyword research and prepare a content structure around your main topic keyword.
💬 Check out the top 10 Google search results and 10 YouTube videos to cover every possible aspect of the main topic.
💬 Produce a piece of skyscraper-like content, i.e. the best content in the industry on a particular topic.
